Fort King Field Experience

Class Schedule:
Oct 14-18, 2024
Public Archaeology Days*:
Oct 19th
*The public is invited to come spend the day or a few hours helping out.
Follow your dream and find out what it is like to be an archaeologist! For a week you will work side by side with GARI staff learning how to excavate, analyze data, and conserve artifacts. We will be excavating the area that is the supposed location of the suttler’s shop and is expected to be an exciting project.
We will run the class throughout the year. The tuition cost is $300 per person and anyone under the age 16 must register and participate with an adult. Participants will be selected through an application process on a first come, first served basis.
All classes will run Monday-Friday from 8:30-3:30. There will be a welcome lunch provided on Monday. Monday-Thursday are slated to be field work days with Friday being a lab work day where we learn to wash and curate artifacts we found. We may need to switch which day is the lab day depending on the weather. Friday afternoon will be a reception where you will receive a certificate of completion. Each day at lunch we will provide a lecture on various topics relating to history, archaeology, or Fort King.
Who This Class is For:
Anyone! This class is perfect for adults and retirees who want to try something a little different on their vacation. If you have an interest in history, archaeology, the outdoors, etc. then you are encouraged to sign up. This class is also great for a young adult that thinks perhaps archaeology might be a career they are interested in pursuing. We can help you figure out if this field is right for you before you invest in a college major. If you are a college student, we do suggest you take an accredited field school and receive credit towards your major. We are unable to offer credit for this class at this time. Still undecided? Then come to one of our public archaeology days and see for yourself how exciting being a part of uncovering the past can be.
The Fine Print:
If a week becomes full a wait list will be started. Once notified of acceptance, you will have 10 business days to pay for your spot. You may cancel up to 30 days before your class for a full refund. Less than 30 days notice cancelation will be at GARI’s discretion.Ideally, if you can’t make your assigned class we would prefer to move you to a different session.
Obviously we can’t control the weather and we will do our best to ensure you have the best experience possible despite any weather obstacles. We even have our own meteorologist on staff too! In the event the weather is going to be an issue for the whole week we will reschedule the class or fully refund your money.
Students will need to provide their own lunch, work gloves, water, sunscreen, bug spray, appropriate clothing, a folding chair if desired, and other personal items you may need. All field equipment will be provided. Housing is not provided.
